Artist Statement
I consider myself a material smith with a never ending curiosity for discovering how media can be combined to convey emotion. There is power imbued from my hands into the materials I use. Exploring the alchemical process of transformation, I weave themes of impermanence, grief, and loss into sculptures, jewelry, and installations. Each piece serves as a meditation on the cycles of life and the inherent impermanence that shapes our existence.
Drawing inspiration from the natural world, I capture ephemeral moments that remind us of what it means to be human. I work with materials that reflect elements of my experience—the grounding weight of metal with its ability to be altered, the sharp, confusing refractions and vulnerable transparency of glass, the memory-laden history of textiles, and the irrefutability of a moment captured in a photograph. The objects I create become a physical manifestation of grief, the change from loss, and the contemplation of death.
The found objects I use are not just mediums but remnants embodying the life and energy of what once existed. I assemble these in accumulation to serve as vessels of memory of the abundance of a life lived, relationships experienced, and love shared. They are reminders of the meaningful moments aggregated, and that death is essential to living.
I delve into the complexities of grief and death, using it as a catalyst for growth and renewal. I believe that the process of mourning and contemplation of death lead to profound understanding and beauty. My work invites the viewer to reflect on their own history of loss and recognize the delicate balance between sorrow and joy. Ultimately, my work is an offering — a reminder that even in the darkest moments, resilience and beauty can provide healing and transformation.
